Further details to follow. We received our 5th Green Flag for ‘Biodiversity’ in May 2017. This was the culmination of two years of hard work by the students and teachers. A special ‘Thank You’ to our Green Schools committee members – Helen Cronin (co-ordinator), Conaill O’ Sullivan (chairperson), Beth McCarthy (secretary), Nathan Kelleher, Leah Murphy, Darren Lynch, Tara Desmond, Noreen Kelleher, Alannah O’ Sullivan, Ruth Casey, Katelyn O’ Donoghue, Ugne Raila and Ella Healy. There was an awards ceremony held in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Little Island, Cork on Friday, May 12th, 2017. We were limited to bringing 4 people from the school to the awards ceremony. Following a draw, which included all members of the Green Schools Committee, Nathan Kelleher and Beth McCarthy were the winners and travelled to Cork along with Miss Cronin and Eileen Scanlon to receive the flag.
Active Flag
We are currently working towards our second Active Flag. Huge improvements and advancements have made been over the past while. Pupils in all classes have been participating in fundamental movement skills as well as skipping initiatives including Skip around Europe and Skip around the world. We have new playground markings which enhance our play time and playground immensely. Playground Games are currently in operation in the junior playground and the children look forward to a new game weekly during break times. Children have created their own active journals to illustrate and record their activity levels during the school day. We have a wonderful Active flag committee who work tirelessly to improve activity levels during the school day. Ms J. Cronin & Ms. Moriarty (co-ordinators) have attended seminars and training on physical literacy as well as CPD in Physical education. We look forward to planning our Active week in conjunction with Kindness week, as part of Sport’s Day every June. We celebrate all participation and achievements in school and in out of school activities. We really are a very Active School!
Blue Star Programme
Kilgarvan Central School has been awarded their first ever Blue Star European Flag and a Certificate for successfully completing the Blue Star Programme 2014 – 2015. The Blue Star Programme is an education initiative for primary school students across Ireland. The idea of the programme is to foster better understanding and knowledge of the European Union amongst Irish primary pupils. Students are encouraged to get creative and undertake a programme of tasks and activities in order to introduce participants (pupils, teachers, parents and the wider community) to the EU: what it means and how it works. The raising of the Blue Star European Flag will take place in the new academic school year 2015 – 2016.
